Farmhouse kitchens are very popular and can add a homely, traditional feel.  Whilst we don’t all live in farmhouses, we can create our own version by adding certain features along with our own unique style.  The great thing about creating a farmhouse kitchen is so many of the features are beautiful yet practical.

Open Shelving

Open shelving offers the opportunity to display special crockery and bowls, and also gives a less formal look to the kitchen.  It is also very practical as everything is within easy reach.

Practical and rustic flooring

There are so many options when it comes to flooring for a farmhouse kitchen and much depends on the colour of the kitchen units.  Wooden floors can look beautiful with coloured units.  With oak units, the choice is endless, from quarry tiles, to limestone to slate.

Exposed Beams

If you are lucky enough to have these in your home, they can add character to the kitchen, and should be an integral part of the kitchen.

Kitchen Table

No farmhouse kitchen is complete without a farmhouse table.  Choose one that is as a big as the space can afford.  These are often for sale second hand and can be bought back to life with some careful sanding or maybe painted.  A popular look is to have different style chairs, so don’t worry if you can’t get a matching set.

Aga or range cooker

An Aga cooker is the mainstay of a farmhouse kitchen, however not everyone likes to cook on them, and may prefer a range cooker.  There is an excellent range of range cookers on the market, from very traditional to a more modern look, and in a whole array of colours.

Belfast Sink

A Belfast sink adds a traditional, old fashioned look to the kitchen and is an essential item in the quest for creating a farmhouse style kitchen.

Welsh Dresser

A welsh dresser works well in a farmhouse kitchen.  As it is freestanding it can stop the kitchen looking uniform and completely fitted, and the open shelving allows for the display of a range of practical bits and bobs that can add a splash of colour and interest.

Wicker Baskets

Wicker baskets offer a practical storage solution, and at the same time add cosiness to the kitchen.  Large wicker baskets can be put on the floor and small ones on kitchen countertops.

Fabrics

Curtains, blinds and tablecloths can be add a homely feel to the kitchen, and choose fabrics that add the farmhouse feel, such as gingham, or patterned ones with farm animals or horses.

Food Weighing Scale

These can be a lovely way to dress up kitchen countertops or open shelving.  Look for old fashioned, rustic ones, that have mini weights.

Plate Racks

Plate racks allow you to show off some of your favourite plates, whilst providing practical kitchen storage.  They can be used on any wall in the kitchen and it is perfectly acceptable to have more than one.
