Tell us a bit about you

Tamara musician Glasgow

My name is Tamara, I am a musician and music producer, I am also a lecturer in Music Business. I live in Glasgow with my husband and two children.

Tell us about your home

Our house is a mid-terrace from around 1910s.

How would you describe your home?

Our house is dark and moody and full of colour and pattern and pretty maximalist.

Which is your favourite room in the house?

dramatic dark kitchen

I think the kitchen is my favourite room as it is the most lived in and the centre of the home, the decor is dark but the room is full light from the skylights and bifold doors.

How does your home reflect any passions or interests?

amazing wallpaper in toilet

I love colour and prints and patterns and the house is full of that. I like to think of wallpaper as a piece of art on the wall so we have lots of wallpaper in the house as well.

What are your favourite items in the home?

dramatic dark and moody living room

I love the diving helmet in our front room. It belonged to my father-in-law who was a deep sea diver and I have never seen anything else quite like it before.

When you moved into your house was it the finished article or was it a project?

theatrical hallway full of art

The house was in need of a full renovation when we moved in. It hadn’t been decorated since the 1970s and it still had some of the lead wiring running up to the loft. We stayed at my parents for about 8 weeks while we made it vaguely safe to live in with the kids and then we lived in it throughout the renovations. We had no working kitchen for 18 months and had to make all meals in the microwave.

What renovation and decorating have you done?

upcycled hallway furniture

We have done literally everything in the house, but we had builders and decorators for the majority of the work. The main thing that I have done myself is the painting and wallpapering (but only in the later months, we had decorators at the start) I do a lot of upcycling of the furniture as well which I enjoy.

Have you had any DIY or styling disasters?

theatrical dark living room and fireplace

I think we have been fairly lucky. I did use a hammer to break through a bit of wood in front of a fireplace and I went right through and smashed the beautiful original tiles that had been hiding behind. I managed to repair them myself though and I don’t think you can really notice unless you look too closely.

What is your top home styling tip?

bedroom with blue drama and wallpaper

I think my biggest tip is to not be afraid, I love mixing and matching things that you may not usually think work together, but usually they will! The worst that happens is that you change something that you decide you don’t like. Nothing needs to last forever!

Is there anything in your home that you couldn’t live without?

fabulous green tiled bathroom

My bath.

They say that every home tells visitors a story about who lives there. What do you think your home says about you?

funky home decor

I think it says that we don’t take ourselves too seriously and that we have a lot of different interests and passions (and that we like a party)
