At Home with Sophie @homeatthevineyard
Tell us about you
Hello, I’m Sophie! I am originally from Nottinghamshire but went to university (many years ago now) in Worcester, where I met my boyfriend, and we decided once we finished university we would like to live in Worcester permanently as we both loved it so much. It’s a pretty little city. After many years of renting, we finally bought our first home last year in a small village just outside of Worcester. Our home is a new build on a small estate with fields surrounding us. The location is what drew us to the house.
Tell us about your home
Our house is less than a year old, so very new and modern. It was a massive blank canvas when we moved in, so slowly making it less bland by filling it with furniture and items we love. It’s an ongoing slow project as I don’t want to rush anything and regret it.
How would you describe your home?
My home style would be a mixture of everything, as I tend to buy what I love and try and make it work haha. I would say I am massively inspired by the area that we live, which is in the country. However, I am always inspired by our travels (which is a distant memory for us at the moment) and the Mediterranean. I love greens, blues, terracotta and earthy tones house which helps bring warmth into the house.
Which is your favourite room in the house?
My favourite room in the house would be our bedroom, as it’s the only room in the house that is close to being entirely finished. I have gone for neutral tones and kept the walls white. Its South facing so very sunny and just makes me so happy when I walk in.
How does your home reflect any passions or interests?
I enjoy upcycling furniture, which takes something old and gives it a new lease of life. I like the mixture of old furniture in a new house as I think it adds character.
There are also always muddy wellies nearby in the hallway, we love going outside and walking our 3 year old rescue Greyhound Murphy around the nearby fields.
What are your favourite items in the home?
One of my favourite pieces of furniture is the cabinet in our living room which I upcycled. It went from being an orange, shiny wooden cabinet to looking aged and rustic. A great Facebook market place find.
When you moved into your house was it the finished article or was it a project?
Being as it’s a new build house, it was a finished article in terms of we didn’t need to renovate anything. However, it’s an ongoing project trying to add character to a big white box.
What renovation and decorating have you done and have you learnt any new skills?
Being as it’s the first house we have owned, we have learnt so many new skills, like using a drill. The first thing I painted was our downstairs loo, in an Olive green shade, which turned out better than I imagined apart from getting green paint all over the ceiling.
Have you had any DIY or styling disasters?
Not yet, but I am sure there are going to be plenty.
What is your top home styling tip?
Don’t rush everything. I know it can be tempting to rush out and buy lots of new things, but I think it’s best to slow down and pick up items that you love when you are out and about or on your travels. These items will bring you more joy.
Is there anything in your home that you couldn’t live without?
Our greyhound Murphy, he is a sweet boy...most of the time!
They say that every home tells visitors a story about who lives there. What do you think your home says about you?
That we have a massive dog who rules the settee. Murphy takes up all of the room. I also think that it shows we like it to be an inviting house, a place where you can come in relax and get cosy. I love pillows and blankets.
