At Home With Kelly @broomfieldhouserenovation

This week we are at home with Kelly. The lovely lady behind the very popular instagram account @broomfieldhouserenovation where she shares images of her stunning home; a Georgian period country hall full of original features, antiques and second-hand items she has thoughtfully collected especially for it.

Tell us a bit about you

I’m Kelly age 39 I live with my husband and 2 sons age 13 and 9. We have 2 dogs and 4 chickens. I am a secretary in a local primary school. We live in South Yorkshire and have lived at Broomfield House for 3.5 years.

Tell us about your home

A period property dating back to the late 1700s so the Georgian era. Lots of lovely original features, 2 open fires and lots of outdoor space.

How would you describe your home?

I love traditional styles and older pieces of furniture. I like colour and texture. There is a strong blue theme running through the house although not intentionally so this must be a colour I’m drawn to.  I like to create a homely feel with lots of lamps, candles and soft furnishings.

Which is your favourite room in the house?

The lounge is my favourite room, when we first moved in this was a formal dining room but the features and light in there deserve to be appreciated daily.

How does your home reflect any passions or interests that you have?

I love anything second hand and my home reflects this. I get very little pleasure from buying new and am happy to wait until I find the right piece. I’m a big lover of antique shops, charity shops and good old selling sites.

What are your favourite items in the home?

We have a suit of armour that belonged to my grandparents so this is very precious to me. I think I inherit a lot of my style from my grandmother who has a very traditional home with the same furniture that she had when I was little because it was made to last and is timeless.

We also have some antique chairs that we bought off the previous owner, they were in a bit of a state but we had them restored and upholstered and they now have pride of place in our bay window

When you moved into your house was it the finished article or was it a project?

Our home was definitely a project. At the time of purchase we called it a 10 year project however we have made really good progress in the 3.5 years we have lived here and I see it being completely finished by 5 years. We were lucky to have a functioning although slightly dated bathroom and kitchen so it wasn’t unbearable for the first few months although it was very cold.

Have you done any renovation or DIY?

My husband is a big believer in supporting tradespeople and not trying to do jobs that people have trained hard to do so we always get in decorators, plumbers joiners etc. This sometimes makes it a bit more costly but the finished article is always the best it can be and if it’s not you can call on someone to rectify it. What we have become though is gardeners we went from a small garden in our last property with a patio and lawn area to a huge established garden so we’ve had to learn quite quickly and actually find it really enjoyable.

Have you had any DIY or styling disasters?

Honestly no, I don’t rush things I take my time to get to know the room and really think what I want from it. I always doubt my decision as I make them as this is my nature but it always comes together. I also think what’s the worst that can happen.  Go with the bold wallpaper if you love it you can always change it if you don’t like it. I know what I like and what I don’t.

What is your top home styling tip?

Be true to you, don’t follow the latest trends as they are out as fast as they came in. Don’t ask for opinions as everyone has a different style and you will go with what you think in the end anyway, and it’s a waste of time.

Is there anything in your home that you couldn’t live without?

Apart from my family and my animals, it would have to be the kettle we all love a cuppa and that kettle was constantly on during lockdown.

They say that every home tells visitors a story about who lives there. What do you think your home says about you?

People that visit Broomfield leave feeling happy and relaxed that’s sometimes to do with the alcohol but I also think it’s a home that gives you a hug when you need it. I like things to be tidy but it’s also very homely you can leave your shoes on if you want to, put your feet up on the sofa minus the shoes! and sit around my kitchen table with a cuppa or a wine and put the world to rights.
