This week I'm at home with Cerys, the home interior and fashion enthusiast behind the very popular instagram account @ty_victorianhouse where she shares stunning images of her incredible Victorian home. Read on to learn more about Cerys, her home, lifestyle, and top tips for home styling.
Tell us about you
I’m Cerys and I’m the owner of @ty_victorianhouse. I live in Cardiff with my husband and son and day to day I work in marketing and communications and my interiors account is my hobby. Our home is a 4 bed terraced Victorian home in a busy but leafy area of Cardiff. We’re so lucky to live near great shops and restaurants as well as beautiful green spaces, all within walking distance.
Tell us about your home
Our home is a beautiful Victorian home, built in 1896 and it was certainly love at first sight when we viewed it. It’s full of period features from original tiled floors to fabulous fireplaces, five in all.
How would you describe your home?
Our style is hard to define, perhaps traditional with a modern twist. We’ve definitely tried to blend the old and new together. As well as some lovely antiques that we wanted to showcase in our home, we have some mid-century pieces and modern artwork, lighting and other accessories to create a contrast.
Which is your favourite room in the house?
It’s so hard to choose but I think it has to be our master bedroom. It feels so luxurious and I have to pinch myself every time I walk through the door. It’s my favourite place to relax in. We added some beautiful built in alcove wardrobes to the space which really elevates it and the bay window is so lovely.
How does your home reflect any passions or interests?
Being Welsh speakers and being very proud of our heritage, we have some Welsh artwork dotted around the house along with some beautiful traditional Welsh blankets.
What are your favourite items in the home?
I never thought that antiques would be something that I would want in our home but my husband definitely changed my mind on that. I’m now a bit of an antiques lover. We only have a few dotted around but in the living room especially, it’s created such a unique feel. We have a beautiful ornate gold mirror, a mid-century sideboard and a gorgeous lamp.
When you moved into your house was it the finished article or was it a project?
It’s interesting - we were looking for a big renovation project, as in, a house that was really bad inside but on the surface, this house didn’t look that bad but we soon realised there was far more work to do than we anticipated. We always had big plans for the kitchen/diner and we still haven’t got around to that two and a half years later. One day!
What renovation and decorating have you done?
My husband is pretty handy when it comes to decorating (better than I am) but we’ve done all of the painting work ourselves and filling and sanding walls, caulking and finishing - it’s easy to forget about all the prep work but it’s so, so important to get a good finish. We wallpapered the bathroom and the office ourselves with the help of my dad and we’re so happy with how those have turned out. Wallpapering is definitely a new skill. I’m sure there’s things I’ve forgotten about but we’re definitely expecting to learn more skills when it comes to the big kitchen renovation.
Have you had any DIY or styling disasters?
Touch wood, we’ve had no disasters… yet!
What is your top home styling tip?
Try to go with your gut - save inspiration and then try and see which images are similar to each other then delete anything that looks outside of that style.
Is there anything in your home that you couldn’t live without?
Our under stairs storage where most of our shoes and other bits and pieces live. It’s been a game changer for us to keep the hallway clean and tidy.
They say that every home tells visitors a story about who lives there. What do you think your home says about you?
I think our home is sophisticated, bold and welcoming with a touch of fun which I’d like to think we are too.
The Home Edit
Lived-in or showhome?
A bit of both… I think it’s possible.
If you could only paint your walls one colour, which one would it be?
Frosted sage by Valspar. It’s such a gorgeous deep green.
What is your pet hate when it comes to your own or other’s homes?
I don’t like those knot cushions. I just don’t get it. Sorry if anyone has one. It’s just my opinion!
Favourite front door colour?
This is a tough one, but I think Railings by Farrow & Ball.
Carpet or Floorboards?
Kitchen table dining or formal dining room?
Kitchen table dining with a bit of styling up to make it a formal dining table!
High gloss or rustic?
Wallpaper or Brick Walls?
